It's Not a "Free Vacation"
When you invite your nanny to Europe or Hawaii, remember: they are leaving their friends, family, and bed to work for you. It is a business trip.
The Three Golden Rules of Travel
- Separate Sleeping Arrangements:
Your nanny should never be required to share a room with your children at night unless they are being paid an overnight fee for that specific service. They need a private space to decompress.
- Travel Time is Work Time:
All hours spent in transit (on the plane, in the car, waiting at the airport) are compensable working hours under federal law.
- The Travel Stipend:
Because they cannot go home and eat their own food, families typically cover all meals plus a "Travel Stipend" ($50-$150/night) to compensate for the inconvenience of being away from home.
Schedule Clarity
Provide a printed itinerary before the trip. Mark clearly which hours are "On Duty" and which are "Free Time." Do not assume they will hang out with you during their free time - they may want to explore the city solo.
