Navigating Screen Time: A Guide for Families & Nannies
The Screen Dilemma
In 2024, screens are ubiquitous. A lack of clarity around screen usage is a top source of friction between families and nannies.
The "Zero Screen" Policy
For children under 2, the AAP recommends zero screen time. Professional nannies are adept at filling days with sensory play, outdoors time, and reading. If you require zero screens, ensure you have provided the resources (books, art supplies, strollers) to make this feasible.
Controlled Usage
For older children, define the conditions of usage clearly in your contract:
- When: "Only after homework" or "Only during the baby's nap."
- What: "PBS Kids only" or "No YouTube."
- Duration: "30 minutes max."
The Nanny's Phone
Be clear about the nanny's phone usage. It is reasonable to ask that phones be put away while the child is awake, but allow usage during naps. Remember: the nanny uses their phone to track feeds, take photos for you, and play music. It is a tool, not just a distraction.
