Outdoor Play in Every Season: Nature-Based Learning
There Is No Bad Weather, Only Bad Clothing
The Scandinavian proverb captures the philosophy behind the global forest school movement: children thrive outdoors in every season. Research from the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health shows that regular outdoor play improves attention, reduces stress hormones, and builds physical resilience.
The Forest School Philosophy
Originating in Denmark in the 1950s, forest school is a child-led approach to learning that takes place primarily outdoors. Core principles include:
- Child-initiated exploration: Children choose what to investigate - a bug, a puddle, a stick structure
- Regular and repeated access to the same natural space, allowing deep observation of seasonal changes
- Managed risk-taking: Climbing trees, using tools, and navigating uneven terrain builds confidence and body awareness
Seasonal Activity Ideas
Spring:
- Plant seeds and track growth in a nature journal
- Go on a bug safari with magnifying glasses
- Splash in rain puddles and observe water flow patterns
Summer:
- Build forts from fallen branches
- Create nature art with leaves, flowers, and stones
- Set up a water play station with funnels, cups, and hoses
Fall:
- Collect and sort leaves by color, shape, and size
- Build a composting bin and discuss decomposition
- Go on a scavenger hunt for signs of animals preparing for winter
Winter:
- Track animal prints in snow or mud
- Build snow structures or ice sculptures using water and food coloring
- Bundle up for a "listening walk" - stand still for one minute and count how many sounds you hear
Risk vs. Hazard
A critical distinction for nannies and parents: risk is a challenge a child can see and choose to navigate (climbing a boulder). Hazard is a danger a child cannot assess (a sharp piece of hidden glass). The goal is to allow risk while removing hazard.
Essential Gear
- Rain suits and waterproof boots (year-round, not just rainy days)
- Layered merino wool base layers for winter
- Sun hats and SPF 50 sunscreen for summer
- A sturdy backpack with water, snacks, a first aid kit, and a change of clothes
