The "Swiss Cheese" Model: Building a Backup Care Plan

Zero Single Points of Failure

In engineering, relying on a single node is a critical risk. In childcare, relying solely on one nanny is the same.

When your nanny texts at 6 AM that they have the flu, do you have to cancel your client meetings? Not if you have the "Swiss Cheese" layers of backup.

Layer 1: The Roster

Maintain a list of 2-3 "occasional" sitters (perhaps former nannies, university students) who know the kids and might be available for ad-hoc days.

Layer 2: Drop-In Centers

Identify a local daycare or play space that offers emergency drop-in care. Register before you need it (submit immunization records, fill out forms) so you can drop off immediately.

Layer 3: The Swap

Build social capital with neighbors or friends. Agree to a "Reciprocal Emergency Protocol" - you watch their kids in an emergency, and they watch yours.

Professionalizing your home means anticipating the inevitable disruptions.
